About Michele

My name is Michele Crepeau, and I’m running for a seat in the Montana Legislature, representing House District 84. I moved to Helena from Missoula in 1999 and I’ve lived in the East Helena area since 2005. I love my East Helena community and I don’t think I’ll live anywhere else. I’m looking forward to representing each of you in the Montana House.

A bit about Me

I moved to Montana when I was in eighth grade, and I attended high school at Loyola Sacred Heart in Missoula. I graduated high school in 1981 and became a single mom in 1984.

Although I worked two jobs, I still couldn’t make ends meet. I had to rely on food stamps and the Women Infants and Children (WIC) program, to get by.

In 1989 I took a big leap and began college at the University of Montana. I graduated from the law school at UM in 1999 and moved to Helena for a job as a tax attorney with the Department of Revenue.

I chose to work in public service because I was grateful for the support I had received from Montana’s social welfare programs and I felt the need to pay it back by paying it forward. In 2005 I moved to the East Helena area where I raised my kids and where I have continued to live happily with my husband, Kent Peterson.

During my time with the Department of Revenue, I primarily handled matters involving property taxation. In 2016 I became the department’s Chief Administrative Law Judge. Throughout my time with the department, my goal was always to ensure the State of Montana “got it right,” even if that meant ruling against the department when hearing cases brought by taxpayers.

Why I'm Running

I retired from the department in May 2023, and I planned to spend my days hanging out with my husband Kent, tending our yards and gardens, remodeling our home, fishing as often as possible, and hunting. In fact, I have spent a lot of time fishing.

But recently I realized the property tax burden placed on Montana citizens was becoming overwhelming. Someone needs to do something about that, and that’s why I’m running to represent Montana citizens in the State House.

As your House Representative I intend to do everything I can to reduce your property tax burden. I will also support access to Montana’s public lands. As an individual who fishes and hunts on Montana’s public lands, I will work hard to ensure all Montana families have the right to recreate on public lands, now and in the future.
